CUMBERLAND COUNTY — RCMP in Nova Scotia are investigating a fatal boating incident that claimed the life of a 24-year-old man near Oak Island.
The incident occurred in Cumberland County, on the province’s north shore. Police have not released the name of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
RCMP said the investigation is ongoing. Details on the circumstances surrounding the incident were limited in the initial report, and investigators have not indicated whether charges are anticipated.
Oak Island is known internationally for the so-called “Money Pit,” a long-running mystery involving alleged buried treasure that has attracted explorers and television crews for generations. The island is located in Mahone Bay on the South Shore, though the fatal incident occurred in Cumberland County, which is on the opposite coast.
Boating safety remains a concern during the summer months as recreational marine activity increases. Transport Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard regularly issue reminders about lifejacket use, sobriety, and weather awareness.
