AYLESFORD, N.S.
Questions remain following a tragic boating accident on Aylesford Lake that left one man dead and another missing on Canada Day.
Emergency crews responded to the Kings County lake at approximately 4:45 p.m. on July 1 after receiving reports that two people had been ejected from a boat. RCMP say five men from Kings County were aboard the vessel when changing surface conditions on the water caused two passengers to be thrown overboard.
A 70-year-old man from Aylesford was later found in the water by another boater nearby. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Search efforts continue for a 58-year-old Aylesford man who remains missing.
At this stage, investigators have not released detailed information about what caused the shift in water conditions that preceded the incident.
RCMP have only stated that the men were ejected after the “surface conditions of the water changed.” Authorities have not indicated whether the conditions were related to wind, waves, weather, boat speed, or the wake from another vessel. The cause remains part of the ongoing investigation. [en.wikipedia.org], [forbes.com]
As a result, many of the circumstances leading up to the accident remain unknown.
There is currently no timeline for when the search for the missing boater may end.
Multiple agencies remain involved in the operation, including the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), Valley Ground Search and Rescue, the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA), and the Nova Scotia RCMP Underwater Recovery Team. According to officials, helicopters, drones, boats, and specialized search personnel have been deployed to help locate the missing man.
Searches of this nature typically continue until the missing person is found or search coordinators determine that all reasonable search options have been exhausted, though authorities have not commented on how long operations are expected to continue in this case.
As the search continues, officials have implemented several measures to ensure responders can work safely and effectively.
The Municipality of the County of Kings has temporarily closed the public beach at Aylesford Lake to swimming and paddling. Residents and visitors are also being asked to avoid interfering with helicopters, drones, and emergency personnel operating in the area.
RCMP have advised that a significant emergency response presence will remain on and around the lake while the search and investigation continue.
Authorities have not yet released information regarding whether the men involved in the incident were wearing personal flotation devices.
The three other men who were aboard the boat were not injured. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident while search crews focus on locating the missing boater.
Anyone travelling near Aylesford Lake is being asked to respect emergency operations and give responders the space they need as the search continues.
