Halifax Man Honoured for Remarkable Literacy Journey

HALIFAX — A Halifax man who overcame years without access to formal education has been recognized with Nova Scotia’s 2026 Council of the Federation Literacy Award.

Sada Kabamba originally came from the Democratic Republic of Congo and spent several years living in a refugee camp in Uganda. Financial barriers prevented him from attending school before he moved to Canada in 2023.

Since arriving in Canada, Kabamba has earned his high school diploma and continued on to college. He is now working toward becoming an engineer and hopes to use his education to create things that improve the lives of others.

The Council of the Federation Literacy Award recognizes an adult in each province who has made significant progress in literacy while demonstrating leadership in their community.
