Ottawa Announces $5 Million for HIV Testing and Support

The federal government is investing $5 million to expand HIV prevention, testing and support services across Canada.

The funding will improve access to HIV self-testing kits and support peer-led programs in communities experiencing higher infection rates.

Public-health officials estimate that about 7,000 people in Canada are living with HIV without knowing their status. Earlier diagnosis helps people begin treatment and reduces the risk of transmission.

Two HIV self-tests are approved in Canada. The INSTI test uses a finger-prick blood sample, while OraQuick uses an oral swab.

The federal announcement comes as Manitoba responds to an increase in HIV transmission. The province declared a public-health emergency in May after its reported rate rose to approximately three times the national level.

Health officials say self-testing can help people who face stigma, geographic barriers or difficulty accessing conventional health services.
