HALIFAX — The Nova Scotia government announced June 30 that a new president and chief executive officer has been appointed to lead Nova Scotia Health, the province’s largest health authority.
The appointment comes as the health system continues to face pressures common to jurisdictions across Canada: surgical backlogs, emergency department wait times, and recruitment challenges for nurses and other frontline staff.
The minister of Health and Wellness made the announcement through a news release, describing the appointment as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen health workforce capacity and improve patient care.
Nova Scotia Health operates hospitals, continuing care facilities, and community health programs across the province. The organization employs tens of thousands of staff and manages an annual budget that represents a significant portion of provincial spending.
The incoming CEO brings experience from within the health sector, though specific background details were not included in the initial announcement. The appointment follows a search process that considered both internal and external candidates.
Health system governance has been under scrutiny in recent years. A restructuring several years ago consolidated multiple district health authorities into the single provincial entity now known as Nova Scotia Health, with the aim of reducing administrative duplication and improving coordination.
Patient advocacy groups have called for measurable improvements in access to care. Wait time data published by the province shows variation across regions and specialties, with some patients waiting months for specialist consultations and procedures.
The new leadership team will be expected to advance priorities set by the elected government, including initiatives to expand primary care attachment and reduce reliance on emergency departments for non-urgent care.
