Emergency Preparedness Grants Reach 37 Nova Scotia Municipalities

Thirty-seven Nova Scotia municipalities will benefit from more than $800,000 in provincial funding for regional emergency preparedness.

The money is going to 12 regional emergency management organizations through the REMO Capacity Grant Program. The projects will run for periods ranging from one to four years.

Funding for planning, staff and communications

Recipients can use the grants to improve emergency communications, hire emergency management staff, rent office space, provide preparedness training and develop regional emergency plans.

Regional organizations bring neighbouring municipalities together to coordinate their response when a wildfire, flood, storm or other emergency becomes too large for one local agency to manage alone.

Organizations receiving 2026-27 support serve communities in Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Halifax Regional Municipality, along with areas of Digby, Queens, Antigonish, Colchester, Guysborough, Lunenburg, Pictou, Shelburne and Yarmouth counties. Funding also reaches regional partners in Victoria, Inverness and Richmond counties.

The province awarded about $1 million to seven regional emergency management organizations in 2025. The latest grants are meant to increase staffing, planning and coordination before the next major emergency occurs.
