Tidal Transit Receives $10 Million for Buses and Upgrades

Tidal Transit will add new buses and upgrade its maintenance facility with a combined $10 million from the provincial and federal governments.

The service connects communities in Kings, Annapolis and Digby counties. Funding announced in New Minas on August 13 will support five conventional buses, one electric bus and three electric vehicle chargers.

Maintenance facility will get backup power

Tidal Transit will also modernize its maintenance building and install an emergency backup power system. The work is meant to improve reliability while preparing the rural transit network for electric vehicles.

Nova Scotia is contributing $2 million through the Public Transit Assistance Program. The federal government is providing more than $8 million through the Rural Transit Solutions Fund.

Community transit is an important link for residents who do not own a vehicle or cannot drive. Routes and accessible services help riders reach work, school, medical appointments, stores and community activities across a wide rural area.

The funding follows recommendations in Nova Scotia’s Regional Transportation Plan to continue supporting community and public transportation. Link Nova Scotia administers the province’s community transportation grant programs.
