The “coffee shop effect” may be more than just a caffeine boost, with mental health experts suggesting our surroundings can play a major role in productivity and focus.

According to psychologists and neuroscientists, coffee shops create a unique mix of novelty, moderate background noise and subtle social pressure that can help people get into work mode.

The unfamiliar setting can act as a mental reset, while the steady buzz of conversation and activity may keep the brain engaged without becoming overwhelming.

Experts also point to “social facilitation”, the idea that being around others who appear productive can encourage similar behaviour.

Unlike home environments, cafés often come with fewer distractions such as household chores, televisions or other competing demands.

However, the effect is not universal.

People sensitive to noise or those who rely on routine may find busy public spaces more distracting than motivating, particularly for tasks requiring deep concentration.
