Heavy Rain and Flooding Close Roads in Cape Breton

Residents are being urged to avoid flooded roads as heavy rain creates dangerous conditions across parts of Cape Breton.

Heavy rainfall has caused flooding and road closures in communities across Cape Breton. Roads in the Sydney and Glace Bay areas were among those affected as a slow-moving weather system brought sustained downpours to eastern Nova Scotia. Rainfall totals could reach 200 millimetres in some locations.

Environment and Climate Change Canada warned that localized flooding and damage to infrastructure are possible. Drivers should never attempt to cross a flooded roadway because the depth of the water—and the condition of the road beneath it—may be impossible to judge.

Residents should monitor provincial and municipal emergency notices for current road conditions, closures and safety instructions. The forecast and list of affected locations may change as the weather system develops.
