Speaker Withdraws Legislature Bans Ahead of Fall Sitting

Temporary bans imposed on 36 people following a protest inside the Nova Scotia legislature have been withdrawn.

Nova Scotia legislature Speaker Danielle Barkhouse has rescinded temporary bans preventing 36 people from entering the legislature. The restrictions followed a protest in the public gallery during the spring sitting.

The bans came into effect on September 1 but were withdrawn after concerns were raised by opposition parties, government members and the Nova Scotia Arts Coalition.

Barkhouse maintained that the earlier disruption interfered with the work of elected representatives. She said people responsible for future disruptions could be removed and potentially barred if their conduct continues. Visitors will still be expected to follow the legislature’s rules governing conduct in public galleries.
