Provincial funding will support work intended to reduce wildfire risk in the historic African Nova Scotian community.

Upper Hammonds Plains is receiving nearly $200,000 to help protect the community from wildfires. The funding will support measures intended to reduce combustible vegetation and other hazards that could allow a wildfire to spread.

Upper Hammonds Plains is a historic African Nova Scotian community with roots extending back more than two centuries. Community representatives say protecting the area means preserving its history as well as its homes and residents.

Preventive work can include clearing brush, creating defensible space around buildings and improving emergency planning. Residents should continue to follow provincial restrictions and local fire-safety guidance during periods of elevated wildfire risk.
