Nova Scotia Approves Province’s Largest Wind Project

Nova Scotia has granted environmental assessment approval to the Ocean Lake Wind Project in Guysborough County.

Plans call for as many as 158 turbines with a combined generating capacity of approximately 1,264 megawatts. The province says that would be enough electricity to power the equivalent of about 404,000 homes.

Construction is expected to begin in 2029 and take about five years. The development could create between 400 and 500 construction jobs, followed by 40 to 50 permanent operational positions.

The project is being developed by EverWind NS Holdings Ltd. and Membertou Development Corporation near New Harbour, Goldboro, Larry’s River, Lundy and Roachvale.

Its approval includes 61 conditions intended to protect human health and the environment. Provincial estimates say the completed project could reduce annual greenhouse-gas emissions by about 1.94 million tonnes.
